Supernatural has returned for its sixth season with a bang, with Sam and Dean Winchester doing what they do best: fighting evil and killing monsters.

Supernatural is back for its much anticipated sixth season, and Sam and Dean are a little different to how we remember them. After the tumultuous and climatic end to the fifth series which seemed to draw a line under the story of the Winchester boys, the sixth season of Supernatural had its work cut out to follow on in a convincing manner.

End of Supernatural Season 5 and the Reign of Eric Kripke

The end of the fifth season saw the end to the five season plan and over arching storyline of Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, who had not foreseen the huge rise in ratings that season 4 and 5 garnered, which prompted the CW Network to renew the series for a 4th season.

Kripke is no longer the main force of the show, but, has returned as an Executive Producer, handing over the main role to fellow Executive Producer Sera Gamble, so we should see some changes to the show almost immediately.

Sera Gamble and the Future of Supernatural

Gamble has confirmed the focus of the sixth season will be very much on the relationship of the two brothers, so no real change there then. She (Gamble) has also confirmed that the sixth season will go back to the grass roots of the Supernatural world, concentrating on what made the show in the first place and garnered such a large amount of loyal fans.

Supernatural Season 6 going Back to the Basics

Instead of focusing on a huge apocalyptic threat, the sixth season will be made up mostly of closed episodes featuring the kind of monsters and things that go bump in the night, that were more the case with the first 3 series, such as ghosts, ghouls, vampires and creatures.

But there will be an overarching storyline that traverses the season. This is looking more and more likely to be that of the condition of Sam, since he escaped “the cage” Hell and the means of both his ascension, and his Grandfathers descent from Heaven.

Sam and Deans Grandfather Campbell

On the subject of the boys Grandfather, Mitch Pileggi, of (among numerous) X-Files fame, has come back to reprise his earlier role as Grandpa Campbell, now as a recurring role. Note he is Sam and Dean's grandfather on their mother's side, whom Dean met when he went back in time to foil the yellow-eyed demons' plans in the past.

Colin Nemec, of Stargate SG1 fame, has joined the cast as the boy’s cousin. He is described as capable and a good hunter, but, there is an immediate question as to both Grandpa Campbell’s and his band of hunters' motives.

Supernatural's Bobby Singer

Jim Beaver reprises his much loved role as Bobby Singer, and is the main focus of episode 4, A weekend at Bobbies, which deals with him reclaiming his “borrowed” soul, which is in the hands of Crowley. Crowley, played by Mark Sheppard, returns as the King of the Crossroads Demon, who has, in the resulting turmoil in Hell after the failed Apocalypse, been promoted to the King of Hell. Because of this, it would appear that, A Weekend at Bobbies will not be the last time we see this particular Demon.

Supernatural's Castiel

Firm fan favourite, the troubled angel Castiel, played by Misha Collins, is back for the sixth outing of Supernatural. Having been resurrected by God, Castiel is waging a civil war between the opposing factions that now exist in the angel world. Castiel has become a major character in the angel/demon mythology and even though Supernatural is going back to its roots, it seems impossible that they could leave out Castiel. It is Castiel and Dean’s relationship that provided many of the best spots of comedy relieve in the fifth season and promises to continue through the sixth.

Dean and Lisa's Relationship Over?

It would appear that episode 6, You Can’t Handle the Truth, sees the end of Dean and Lisa’s relationship and Dean’s foray into the “normal life.” For some this relationship had already lasted to long, with it being expected to be phased out at the beginning of the season. It has been kept alive this far and to the shows and Deans characters benefit, adding realism and depth to Deans struggle with normality since the end of the fifth season. It would be difficult to believe that we have seen the last of Lisa and her son.

Is Sam still Loyal to Dean?

The sixth season is already getting well into the action and is looking good so far. There seems to be an edge to the action this season under the new direction of Sera Gamble, the special effects determining the gore and horror appear to have been refocused, already providing a few “hand over eye moments,” to the most seasoned of horror lovers.

The overarching story seems already set, with the threat from not only from the disarrayed ranks of both Heaven and Hell, but also from the inside, with the Campbells' and Sam’s loyalty to Dean in question.

Supernatural Season 6, the Best Season To Date?

The sixth season of Supernatural has started as it means to go on and promises to be faithful to the mythology the first five under Kripke has produced. Six episodes in, the season has yet to really nail down what exactly is going on, nor where the season and characters are heading; this is all for the better.

The sense of not knowing is adding to the suspense and intrigue that the sixth season is expertly producing, giving us an atmosphere of uncertainty and expectancy. Season 6 is most definitely lining up to be possibly one of the best seasons of Supernatural to date.

Supernatural airs in the US on Fridays at 9 pm on the CW Network
